Since its foundation, the Volksbühne has continuously developed innovative forms of theatre direction and expanded their impact. Built in 1914 by architect Oskar Kaufmann, the theatre on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz seats 800 spectators. The construction of the theatre was made possible exclusively by generous donations from the members of the Freie Volksbühne association, the so-called Arbeitergroschen. The Volksbühne is characterised by outstanding personalities in the fields of directing, authorship and art, including Max Reinhardt, Erwin Piscator, Benno Besson, Heiner Müller, Frank Castorf and Christoph Schlingensief. These artists have constantly redefined the boundaries of classical spoken theatre.

We present ourselves as a theatre for children and young people, which means that our focus is strongly on performances for children of primary school age. Occasionally, we also put on evening performances and enjoy great popularity with the "adult audience" with the same productions that we organise for families and school classes.
