The Urban Nation Museum, which opened in Berlin-Schöneberg in 2017, aims to provide a platform for urban contemporary art. The idea is to bring together artists from all over the world, promote young talent, make urban art accessible to a wide audience and be an archive of this temporary art form. By removing ceilings and inserting diagonal bridges, Graft's architects have created a fascinating sequence of works over two floors in a 19th century Gründerzeit-style building. There are also changing exhibitions of art on the modular façade.
The Urban Nation Museum presents a major exhibition every year. For the inaugural exhibition, 150 international and local artists were selected to create art, mainly on canvas, especially for the museum. These included well-known names such as Shepard Fairey, Fintan Magee, Vhils, Herakut, JR and Lora Zombie. The exhibition shows a cross-section of different genres and techniques and covers the entire spectrum of urban contemporary art, from text-based works, portraits and action art to pop art, photorealistic art and conceptual art.
The Urban Nation network, which is part of the non-profit Berliner Leben foundation, attaches great importance to working with the neighbourhood community and regularly organises workshops for children from Nord-Schöneberg. Well-known names in the world of urban art have also sprayed and painted murals on the façades in Bülowstraße.
