In 1996, Sasha Waltz and Jochen Sandig founded the Sophiensæle together with Jo Fabian and Dirk Cieslak (Lubricat) in the rooms of the former Handwerkervereinshaus at Sophienstraße 18. The artistic direction of the theatre was in the hands of Amelie Deuflhard from 2000 to 2007, followed by Heike Albrecht until 2010. Franziska Werner has been the artistic director of the theatre since 2011. Today, the Sophiensæle is one of the most important production and performance venues for the independent performing arts in the German-speaking world. Artists from the Berlin, national and international scene are invited to produce and present their work here on the basis of their artistic concepts, questions and approaches.
The Sophiensæle programme combines theatre, dance, performance, music theatre, visual arts and discursive formats in a productive dialogue. In addition to up-and-coming artists such as Rose Beermann, Henrike Iglesias, Lwowski/Kronfoth Musiktheaterkollektiv, Markus&Markus, Lea Moro and Quast&Knoblich, long-standing partners also work at the Sophiensæle. These include choreographers such as Clément Layes, Lea Martini, Sebastian Matthias, Martin Nachbar, Jochen Roller, Naoko Tanaka and Christoph Winkler as well as directors such as Thorsten Lensing, Johannes Müller + Philine Rinnert and Milo Rau/IIPM. Performance collectives such as Burmester + Feigl, Lovefuckers, Monster Truck, Schmidli + Haug, Social Muscle Club and Turbo Pascal have a long history of collaboration.
The Sophiensæle is not only part of a network of internationally oriented, independent theatres, including Kampnagel Hamburg, Mousonturm Frankfurt/Main, FFT Düsseldorf, Theaterhaus Gessnerallee Zurich and brut Wien, but also organises Freischwimmer and Tanztage Berlin as well as being a venue for renowned Berlin festivals such as MaerzMusik and Tanz im August.
As a meeting place for artists and audiences, the Sophiensæle is at the centre of attention. The eventful history of the building, which was originally conceived as a venue for meetings, further education and festivals, can be felt in the architecture, walls and ceilings of the rooms and creates a unique setting for artistic production and encounters.
Following a careful partial refurbishment in 2011, the building now offers improved working conditions and more comfort for artists and the public, while preserving the historical traces.
Since its foundation, the Volksbühne has continuously developed innovative forms of theatre direction and expanded their impact.
