Originally built in 1880 as the Royal Botanical Museum, the building at Kleistpark in Grundewaldstraße has been home to the Schöneberg Art Office since the late 1960s. During this time, the listed property has successfully established itself as an exhibition venue for contemporary art and is located in the immediate vicinity of the picturesque Heinrich von Kleist Park. With an impressive exhibition space of almost 300 square metres, the Haus am Kleistpark is still one of the largest municipal galleries in Berlin today.
In the former herbarium rooms of the Botanical Museum, exhibitions with different focal points are presented on a rotating basis, including contemporary art, current or historical photography and events of cultural and historical significance. Visitors have the opportunity to visit the gallery free of charge from Tuesday to Sunday and be inspired by the variety of artworks.
In addition to the gallery, the Haus am Kleistpark also houses the renowned Leo Kestenberg Music School. As a member of the Arbeitskreis Kommunale Galerien Berlin (KGB), the gallery is part of a network that presents up to 200 exhibitions a year on around 3,500 square metres of exhibition space. Around 1,000 artists are involved, who together represent the diversity of the Berlin art scene.
