The Direktorenhaus, home to exhibition spaces and workshops, acts as a lively interface for artisans, designers and manufacturers. Here, the concept of "craftmanship" is taken to a new level, where creative experiments, innovative materials, social visions of the future and design art merge together. The key to comprehensive technological, economic and social change lies in the way we produce and consume products. This change is being driven by designers, artisans and manufacturers. Many of them are already pioneers in terms of sustainability and have a clear view of the future. The annual exhibition at the Direktorenhaus impressively illustrates that there is hardly any clear distinction between designers and artisans. In ancient Greece, the term "techné" encompassed both craftsmanship and technical sophistication, indicating a problem-solving behaviour that today is understood as design. The difference between design and craftsmanship lies in the way of thinking, between the conservative and the innovative type of thinker. Both designers and craftspeople actively shape the debate on changing consumption and prosperity, and they do this by creating products that can be experienced by the senses. These products not only retain their value over time, but increase it year after year through their own depth.
