One year after the artist's death, the Bernhard Heiliger Foundation was established on 25 October 1996. The non-profit foundation under private law has set itself the goal of researching Bernhard Heiliger's artistic legacy in a scholarly manner. This includes the collection and archiving of documents related to his work, as well as the conservation and restoration of his extensive estate, which includes sculptures, reliefs, drawings and assemblages. In addition, the foundation aims to present Heiliger's works and support external exhibitions through loans. The foundation is based in the artist's former studio on Käuzchensteig in Berlin-Dahlem, where Bernhard Heiliger lived and worked as an artist from January 1949. In 2013, the Bernhard Heiliger Foundation established Atelierhaus Dahlem gGmbH as its sole subsidiary. The Kunsthaus Dahlem, which is run by this company, is an exhibition centre for German post-war modernism (East and West) that is funded by the cultural administration of the state of Berlin.
